On May 20, ASCE joined with engineering, architecture, and policy leaders to showcase key solutions in school infrastructure. Hosted by the Build America Schools Infrastructure Coalition (BASIC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the event provided an overview of the 2025 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure which graded schools “D+.” Issues across funding, safety, operation and maintenance among other criteria were discussed as well as recommendations to improve school infrastructure.
Panelist discussion centered on continued challenges inhibiting facility development and improvements with key policy insight shared on funding availability to meet ongoing capital and maintenance expenses. Additional perspective was shared on upgrading facilities for greater resilience with a spotlight on school redevelopment post-disaster in the US Virgin Islands. Further exchange focused on how design can influence education outcomes and innovative financing through public-private partnerships can lead to more efficient deployment of resources. An outlook on federal policy and advocacy was also highlighted.
Featured speakers for this discussion were:
- Mary Filardo, Executive Director, 21st Century Schools Fund
- Pamela Loeffelman, Senior Principal, DLR Group
- Bill Bradley, Principal, Practice Leader, Stantec
