The Department of Transportation (DOT) on May 13th announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) making $50 million available through the Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grant program. Established by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), the SMART program provides up to $500 million over five years for public sector entities to conduct demonstration projects that involve advanced smart community technologies and systems that improve transportation efficiency and safety.
Through this NOFO, DOT will accept applications for Stage 1 Planning and Prototyping grants. During this stage, the SMART program will fund technology demonstrations and prototypes aimed at solving current transportation problems and building data and technology capacity for state, local, and Tribal government agencies. This NOFO will support projects that involve coordinated automation, connected vehicles, sensors, systems integration, delivery/logistics, innovative aviation, smart grid, and traffic signals. Applications are due July 12th. Later this year, Stage 1 grant recipients will be eligible to expand their projects through the first of several Stage 2 grant opportunities.
