The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has announced the availability of funding for a Rail Research and Development Center of Excellence (CoE), which was made possible by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). FRA published a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) on May 2nd making $5 million available for Fiscal Years (FY) 2022 and 2023. This program is meant to advance research and development efforts that aim to improve the safety, performance, and sustainability of freight, intercity passenger, and commuter rail. Eligible proposals include advances in research and training efforts pertaining to Positive Train Control, grade crossing safety, and systems maintenance. The CoE was designed as a three-year program; another $2.5 million will be made available in FY 2024 subject to the availability of funds. Applications are due July 3rd.
