On July 15th, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) was joined by experts from public and private sectors to discuss and showcase solutions for challenges facing solid waste infrastructure. Hosted by ASCE with partnership from SCS Engineers, the event provided an overview of the 2025 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure which graded solid waste a “C+”. Issues concerning funding, permitting, and safety were highlighted as well as recommendations to improve overall solid waste infrastructure conditions.
Panelist discussion focused on a broad overview of the industry as it currently stands, highlighting the different types of infrastructure needed, the continued importance of sustained investment and policy concerns around Extended Producer Responsibility and disposal bans related to lithium-ion batteries. Further, industry practitioners offered real world case studies and strategies/technologies being implemented today, including Frederick County, Virginia and landfill facilities in operation there. The conversation also touched upon industry research being done into per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminants and their treatment in solid waste processing facilities.
