Recharging Groundwater with SWIFT

In Eastern Virginia, along with much of the US, groundwater is being drained faster than it can recharge. The Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow, SWIFT, aims to re-balance this crucial natural resource. SWIFT is an innovative water treatment project changing the way water is recycled. The aim of this initiative is to take highly treated wastewater destined for the Elizabeth, James, or York rivers and further treat this water to meet minimum drinking water standards. Then, this water will then be discharged back into the Potomac aquifer, the primary source of drinking water for neighboring areas. By discharging cleaner water into the aquifer, this project will begin to balance the scales for drinking water. In time, this project will make drinking water in east Virginia more sustainable than ever before.
