Long-Term Visionary Project to Change the Water Treatment Process

The Carlsbad Desalination Project has been a long-term visionary project to change the water treatment process in drought-plagued Southern California. Using reverse osmosis technology, the plant will use existing infrastructure from the neighboring Encina Power Station to push Pacific Ocean saltwater through membranes that filter out the salt and convert it into potable water. It will be the largest, most energy efficient desalination plant in the U.S. and will provide more than 50 million gallons of drinking water daily with a locally controlled, drought-proof water supply – enough for 300,000 people. A 30-year Water Purchase Agreement is in place between the San Diego County Water Authority and Poseidon for the entire $1 billion plant. The project is slated to be delivering water to the businesses and residents in San Diego County late 2015.
