Handy Companion for a Trip on the Inland Waterways

Knowledge is power when it comes to planning a trip. That’s not only true for the average driver; it also applies to those who pilot the vessels that travel the inland waterways. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recently launched its own version of Waze, the Lock Operations Management Application or LOMA. Lock operators, vessel pilots, USACE management, government agencies, and the navigation industry now can more easily plan and assess a trip via inland waterway. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracks vessel movement and transmits navigation information, such as water levels and lock status, to vessels. Through real time information, geographic displays, and alerts on selected automatically-monitored zones, a trip on the inland waterways are now much more predictable.
