Crafting Wastewater into Beer

Portland, Oregon, is no stranger to pushing the envelope and pioneering new ideas. One of the latest innovations to surface is from Clean Water Services of Hillsboro, which found a way to turn wastewater into craft beer by partnering with local home brewers. The wastewater goes through an advanced treatment process and the home brewers “recycle” the high purity water into a frosty malt beverage. They held a successful 2014 Pure Water Brew Challenge, and this year’s competition will continue the conversation about water reuse. The company is hoping to get people comfortable with the idea that all water has been recycled and can be purified for any purpose.
