This week, ASCE members from Alaska released the 2025 Report Card for Alaska’s Infrastructure. In this third Report Card for The Last Frontier, the overall grade climbed to ‘C,’ and Alaska’s public parks rated at ‘C-’ in the first chapter analyzing that system. Three categories saw reduced grades – Aviation (C-), Energy (D+), Transit (C) – and three others showed improvement: Bridges (B+), Dams (C+), and Ports (C-). While the overall grade for Alaska is now higher than the 2021 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure.

Grade Categories
B+ Bridges
C+ Dams
C Rail, Roads, Solid Waste, Transit
C- Aviation, Ports, Public Parks

Federal Investments Support Ala
ska Infrastructure

The 2025 Alaska Infrastructure Report Card notes that the state’s unique geography, seismic activity, and harsh winter climate pose significant challenges to its built environment.  Federal programs like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act have been instrumental in meeting those challenges.

Recent federal investments – $9.3 billion as of December 2024 – have accelerated almost 4,000 projects. 17% of that funding supports broadband projects, and 15% is bolstering clean water work, facilitating public health and economic opportunity in rural communities.

How to Improve Alaska’s Infrastructure Grades

The 2025 Report Card for Alaska’s Infrastructure offers five recommendations to build a more resilient and inclusive infrastructure network:

  • Establish better, dedicated funding sources.
  • Implement long-term planning regulations for asset management.
  • Incorporate resilience and risk management into project planning, maintenance, and operations.
  • Strengthen leadership and interagency coordination at the state and local levels.
  • Investing in hiring, retention, and training programs to address workforce shortages.
